jQuery Update was created so that developers have a standard way to add jQuery and jQuery UI to their extensions and/or themes.

jQuery and jQuery UI is loaded from the /js folder to ensure that it is loaded before other extension Javascript code (plugins, etc) is loaded from the skin folder. Once jQuery Update is installed, jQuery is enabled by default in both the front band back-end, so the developer does not have to package jQuery with their extension or theme.

jQuery UI is not enabled by default, but can easily be enabled under System/Configuration.

jQuery Update is packaged with all the standard jQuery UI themes (25 or so) which can be selected under System/Configuration. It also allows for custom UI themes.
