To add a product category in OpenCart, log in your OpenCart admin panel and go to Catalog » Categories from the admin navigation menu.
Click on the "Insert" button on the upper right corner of the page.
Enter the basic category information such as category name, meta tags and description. (Note: If you do not know what the meta tags are for you can check out http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Meta_element)
Next, go to the "Data" tab. This tab will allow you to modify the hierarchy of your categories. Here you can set the category you are currently adding to be a subcategory of another via the "Parent Category" dropdown.
Below, you can set the "SEO keyword", image, status and order of your new product category.
The SEO Keyword is important for the proper indexing of your online store by the various search engines.
In order to set an image for your new category simply click on the "Camera image" and a popup will appear allowing you to upload a picture you like from your local computer or set a pre-existing one which is already uploaded in the images directory of OpenCart.
Category status allows you to disable the category from being showed on your site without having to delete it. Sort Order set's the order of which the category will be displayed amongst others in the same parent category.
Finally you need to apply the changes and save your new product category by clicking the "Save" button located on the upper right corner of the page.
